The Science Collection
The Heron Young Scientist Series of Courses (ages 9-12) consists of eleven 8.5” x 11” softcover books ranging in page count from 51 to 87 pages; each course offers the option of an Independent Learning Package or not. The Package consists of self-study guide, exam, exam answers and teacher resources – ideal for homeschooling families.
A few of the 11 courses are: The Fabulous Human Body, World of Plants, Circulation of the Blood, Take a Closer Look – An Introduction to Microscopes for Young Scientists and many more.
The Fabulous Human Body is an elementary but extensive introduction to anatomy, giving the young student understandable information and illustrations about all of the systems and functions of the body – from the smallest elements of our bodies – cells and their function; tissues, circulation, breathing, heart, digestion, kidneys, liver, muscles, cells, bones and joints. By the time the course is completed, the student will have a clear view and appreciation of his/her own amazing body!
The World of Plants begins with a discussion of the three kingdoms of Animal, Plant and Mineral, then defines a plant. The course includes a Young Scientist Journal and instructions for its use in memorializing with words and drawings what the science student observes in his/her explorations. The Learning Guide that is also included gives the student assignments to write down or draw something in the Journal. Besides the obvious scientific value, this practice provides a basic discipline that the child may use for life in other fields of endeavor!
Each course is just as clear and well-written as these two examples. Each one requires 13-17 hours to complete. There are also Free Science Lesson downloads at the website.
