Each story provides insight into the struggles and rewards that the artists and inventors endured, making the larger story being that all people who strive to achieve, will face hardships and obstacles, but that those who persevere may be rewarded with their goals or a deeper life.
The producers cannily incorporate a child into each story, so that the artist and child interact, providing interest to the entire family but also showing how the child plays a significant role in the artist’s life. In the case of Degas and the Dancer, the story is true: Degas was inspired by a young ballet student who lightened his often-dark personality and was part of his painting subject matter. The roles of the children in the other volumes are craftily woven into each story believably and unobtrusively, so there is never a hint of phoniness or trying too hard.
These DVDs have already stood the test of time, having been produced in the early-to-mid 2000s and still as popular as ever. Their longevity is because their subject matter and life lessons are timeless; their production values are very high – all of the actors and writers are working professionals, the premise is clever and thought-provoking and every detail is in place.
